DRIVING TRIP IN MEXICO

Hi Everyone,

I am planning a road trip in April/May of 2026 to Mexico. My itinerary is as follows:
Fly in to Mexico city from Washington DC
4 nts in Mexico city
2 nights in Guanajuato
1 nt in San miguel de Allende
3 nts in Guadalajara
1 nt in Puebla
3nts in Oaxaca
2nts in San Cristobal de las casas
2nts in Merida
3 nts in Tulum ( day trip to Playa del carmen)

Could someone advice if this is okay keeping in mind driving distances. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

Sounds like an amazing trip! Just keep in mind that while driving gives you lots of flexibility, some routes in Mexico can be long or tiring, especially through mountainous areas. It might be worth flying a leg or two to avoid burnout.

The final stretch with beach time is a great way to wind down—this Tulum itinerary gives a nice glimpse of what that part of the trip could feel like.

All in all, very doable with some smart pacing. Enjoy and safe travels!

I'll assume you're thinking of renting a car? If so, be aware that one way drop off fees are very expensive, if a one way drop is offered at all. All of the places on your itinerary are easily accessed by public transportation. I'm assuming you're not driving back to CDMX. BTW, you won't want to drive 8n Mexico City.
