Driving Your Indian Vehicle to Tibet; China from Nepal

Driving an Indian-registered Mahindra Thar to Tibet via the Rasuwagadhi border is an epic but highly regulated adventure. You cannot drive independently; legal entry requires a registered travel agency and months of preparation. YES, it is possible to Drive from India to Tibet, China, in your Indian Vehicle.

1. The "No Independent Travel" Rule​

Independent travel in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) is strictly prohibited. You must join a group minimum of 5 Indian nationals, following the same itinerary.
  • Mandatory Agency: You must book a self-drive tour through a registered agency specializing in overland crossings. .
  • Mandatory Guide: A licensed Tibetan guide must accompany you throughout the journey. They will meet you at the Chinese side of the border with your permits.

2. Visas and Tibet Permits​

  • Chinese Group Visa: Entering from Nepal requires a specific Group Visa obtained from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. This takes 4-7 working days and cancels any existing Chinese visas.
  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTB): Your agency must apply for this 20-30 days in advance. You cannot enter without the original permit document. Companies like Trekking Trail Nepal organize all.

3. Driving and Vehicle Regulations​

Indian licenses and International Driving Permits are not recognized in China.
  • Provisional Chinese License: Your agency will facilitate a temporary permit and translated license once you cross the border.
  • Temporary Plates: Your Thar must be registered for temporary Chinese plates. Required docs include vehicle photos (4 sides), RC, PUC, and international insurance.
  • Nepal Customs (Bhansar): Ensure your Nepal transit permit (Bhansar) covers the full duration of your stay, including the return leg.

4. Special Note for Indian Passport Holders​

  • Kailash & Ngari: For trips to Mt. Kailash or Lake Manasarovar, Indian nationals must use the Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center. Standard agencies cannot issue permits for these regions.
