Getting around the US between towns without flying

I’m planning a longer trip around the US, my starting point is Boston and I want to avoid flying if I can. I’d like to move between a mix of bigger cities and a few smaller towns, not just do one straight line. I have been looking at rail options, long-distance coaches and renting a car for part of the route, but I’m struggling to figure out what is realistic. I don’t mind slow travel days, but I also don’t want to spend the whole trip waiting for connections or arriving late at night in places with limited transport.

For those who have done this kind of overland travel in the US, what worked best for you? Are there certain regions where trains or intercity buses make sense, and other areas where a car becomes the only practical option?

I’m planning a slow-paced trip around the United States without flying and would love to hear what has worked best for others. I’m interested in trains, buses, and road routes that connect both big cities and smaller towns. Any tips on routes, transport passes, or regional options would be great. I once read a great road-trip story online where someone described balancing train travel with local drivers like Seattle Black Limo for flexible legs of their journey. Thanks!
