A Name with Many Stories
No one knows exactly how Kilimanjaro got its name, but there are many interesting theories. My guide told me that people have been trying to figure it out for a long time.- Some say it comes from the Swahili words "Kilima" (which means "mountain") and "Njaro" (which could mean "whiteness" or "shining"). That makes sense because the mountain has a snowy peak that shines in the sun!
- Others believe the name comes from the Chagga people, who live near the mountain. They might have called it "Kilmanare", meaning "impossible journey." That makes sense too because climbing Kilimanjaro is really tough!
What Did Early Explorers Call It?
Before people knew its real name, early explorers called it things like the "Shining Mountain" or the "Great White Mountain" because of its icy top.
