Before I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, I asked the same question: “How long will it take?” I thought maybe one or two days, but I quickly learned that climbing Kilimanjaro is a long journey—and for a good reason!
Different Routes, Different Times
There are several routes to the top of Kilimanjaro, and each one takes a different number of days. The shortest climbs take five days, but most people take six to eight days to have a better chance of reaching the summit. Here are some common routes:
- Marangu Route (5-6 days) – The “Coca-Cola” route, with huts to sleep in.
- Machame Route (6-7 days) – A beautiful but tough trail.
- Lemosho Route (7-8 days) – A longer route with amazing views.
- Rongai Route (6-7 days) – The only trail from the north side.
Why Can’t You Climb It in One Day?
Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) tall. If you climb too fast, you can get altitude sickness, which can make you feel dizzy, weak, and even very sick. That’s why we walked slowly to help our bodies get used to the thin air. Our guides always told us, “Pole, pole,” which means “Slowly, slowly” in Swahili.A Day on Kilimanjaro
Each day, we hiked for about 4-7 hours. We woke up early, ate a big breakfast, packed our bags, and started walking. Along the way, we saw rainforests, rocky hills, and even snow! At night, we slept in tents under the stars. The Longest Day – Summit Night!
The hardest part was the last night. We woke up at midnight and started climbing in the dark. It took about 7-8 hours to reach the summit, Uhuru Peak. When we finally made it, the sun was rising, and the view was breathtaking.Coming Back Down
The way down was much faster—only one or two days. My legs were so tired, but I was happy because I had made it to the top of Africa! How Many Days Should You Take?
The best choice is to take at least 6 or 7 days so your body can adjust and you have a better chance of reaching the summit. The longer you take, the more you can enjoy the adventure!Climbing Kilimanjaro was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most amazing. If you ever decide to climb it, remember: Take your time, go slowly, and enjoy every step!
