If you’re planning to climb this incredible mountain, you’ll need to bring certain gear and supplies to stay safe, comfortable, and strong. In this blog, I’m going to share my packing list with you and help you avoid any mistakes I made along the way. Whether it’s your first time climbing or you’ve done other hikes, this list will make sure you have everything you need for your Kilimanjaro adventure.
1. Backpack and Daypack
The first thing you’ll need is a backpack, and it’s important to get the right size. For your Kilimanjaro climb, you’ll be carrying a daypack, and it’s essential to pack it correctly. Your daypack will carry everything you need for the day, like your water, snacks, camera, and jacket. It should be lightweight, comfortable, and have enough space to carry these essentials.- Daypack: A small, comfortable pack that you’ll use each day during the hike. Make sure it’s lightweight and has straps that won’t dig into your shoulders.
- Large Backpack: This one will be used by the porters to carry most of your gear. It should be big enough to fit everything you need, but remember you don’t need to overpack. The porters will carry it, and you’ll only need a small amount of clothing and gear in your daypack.
2. Clothing for Every Weather Condition
The weather on Kilimanjaro changes a lot as you go higher. At the base, it’s warm and dry, but by the time you get to the summit, it’s freezing! You need to be ready for all sorts of weather, so layering your clothing is important. I learned that layering helps you stay comfortable as you can add or remove clothing depending on how cold or hot it is.- Base Layers: Start with moisture-wicking shirts and pants. These keep you dry when you sweat, which is super important. Avoid cotton clothes because they can get heavy and cold when they’re wet.
- Mid Layers: A fleece jacket or a lightweight insulated jacket will keep you warm in the middle altitudes. I found this really helpful when the temperature started to drop.
- Outer Layer: You’ll need a good waterproof jacket and pants to protect yourself from the rain and wind, especially in the higher altitudes. A good windproof jacket is also important because the wind can get really strong near the summit.
- Warm Clothing for Summit Night: When you reach the summit, you’ll need to be prepared for cold temperatures, sometimes as low as -10°F (-23°C). A down jacket, warm gloves, and thermal socks will help you survive the cold.
3. Footwear for Comfort and Support
The trail on Kilimanjaro can be tough, so you need sturdy shoes to protect your feet. I can’t stress enough how important it is to choose the right hiking boots. After all, you’ll be on your feet for hours every day!- Hiking Boots: Your boots should be sturdy, waterproof, and comfortable. Look for ones that are high enough to cover your ankles, as this will help prevent injuries. I made sure to break in my boots before the climb to avoid blisters.
- Camp Shoes: After a long day of hiking, your feet will appreciate a comfy pair of shoes. Lightweight sandals or sneakers are perfect for wearing around the camp when you’re not hiking.
- Warm Socks: Thick, moisture-wicking socks are key for avoiding blisters and keeping your feet warm. I recommend packing several pairs, especially ones that are designed for hiking and climbing.
4. Sleeping Bag and Sleeping Pad
The nights on Kilimanjaro can be chilly, especially as you go higher. A good sleeping bag will make your nights more comfortable, and a sleeping pad will keep you off the cold ground. When I first started climbing, I underestimated how important these items were for a good rest.- Sleeping Bag: Choose a sleeping bag rated for at least 20°F (-6°C). The temperatures can drop significantly at night, especially at higher altitudes.
- Sleeping Pad: This will provide cushioning and insulation from the cold ground. It’s also essential for getting a better night’s sleep.
5. Water Bottle or Hydration System
One of the most important things to keep in mind while climbing Kilimanjaro is staying hydrated. The air is dry at higher altitudes, and your body needs more water than usual. I made sure to carry enough water on me at all times, and it helped me feel better during the climb.- Water Bottle: I carried a durable water bottle that was easy to refill during the hike. Make sure to bring one that holds enough water for long stretches.
- Hydration Bladder: If you prefer, you can use a hydration bladder (like Camelbak) that lets you drink water while you hike. It’s easy and convenient, and it makes staying hydrated a little less of a hassle.
6. Snacks and Energy Food
Climbing Kilimanjaro requires a lot of energy. On the hike, you’ll burn a lot of calories, and you’ll need snacks to keep you going throughout the day. I packed energy bars, nuts, and dried fruit to snack on during breaks. These foods are lightweight, easy to carry, and packed with energy.- Energy Bars: These are perfect for quick, energy-packed snacks while you hike.
- Nuts and Dried Fruits: These are great for getting a mix of healthy fats and sugars to fuel your body.
- Gels or Electrolyte Tablets: If you want to make sure your body stays balanced, electrolyte gels or tablets can help replace lost salts and minerals from sweating.
7. Sun Protection
Even though Kilimanjaro is a mountain, the sun can be really strong, especially at higher altitudes. I learned this the hard way when I forgot sunscreen one day and ended up with a bad sunburn. Here’s what you’ll need to protect yourself from the sun:- Sunscreen: Pack a good sunscreen with high SPF to protect your skin. Apply it generously, especially on exposed areas like your face and neck.
- Sunglasses: The sun reflects off the snow at higher altitudes, which can damage your eyes. Make sure to bring sunglasses with UV protection.
- Hat or Bandana: A hat will keep the sun off your face and neck, while a bandana can help keep sweat out of your eyes.
8. Personal Items and Toiletries
While you’re hiking, there are a few personal items that will help keep you comfortable. Make sure you pack a few toiletries to stay fresh, as well as some items for hygiene. I found these essential for my peace of mind on the mountain.- Toothbrush and Toothpaste: It’s important to brush your teeth to feel fresh, even while hiking.
- Wet Wipes or Hand Sanitizer: These are perfect for cleaning your hands when there’s no water available.
- Toilet Paper: Sometimes, there aren’t many rest stops with toilets, so it’s important to bring your own toilet paper and pack it out with you.
9. First Aid Kit and Medication
Accidents can happen, and it’s important to be prepared. While your guide will have a first aid kit, I recommend bringing a small personal first aid kit with you, just in case. I packed basic supplies that I knew I might need.- Painkillers: Carry some painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin for headaches, muscle aches, or any discomfort you might feel.
- Altitude Sickness Medication: If you’re worried about altitude sickness, consult your doctor before the trip. They might recommend medications like Diamox to help prevent it.
- Blister Care: Pack some blister pads or ointment, as blisters can be a common issue when hiking long distances.
10. Camera and Extras
Lastly, you’ll want to remember to capture the beautiful moments of your climb! The views from Kilimanjaro are breathtaking, and you’ll want to take lots of photos.- Camera or Smartphone: Make sure you have a camera or smartphone to take pictures, but keep it in a waterproof case when not in use.
- Chargers and Power Bank: You’ll need a power bank to keep your devices charged. Make sure your camera or phone is ready for all the stunning photos you’ll take.
