Kilimanjaro’s Volcanic Origins – The Story of a Giant Mountain

When I first saw Mount Kilimanjaro, I was amazed. It stood so tall, reaching high into the sky, covered in mist and clouds. But what surprised me the most was learning that Kilimanjaro is actually a volcano!

Before my climb, I had no idea that this mountain was once full of fire and lava. Let me tell you the incredible story of how Kilimanjaro was formed.

A Volcano in Africa? Yes!

Kilimanjaro is not just any mountain—it is a stratovolcano, which means it was created by layers of lava and ash over millions of years. It is also the tallest mountain in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). But don’t worry—it is a dormant volcano, which means it hasn’t erupted in thousands of years and is not likely to erupt again anytime soon.

How Was Kilimanjaro Formed?

A long time ago—about three million years ago—there were huge movements under the Earth’s surface. Deep inside the Earth, molten rock, called magma, started rising. This magma pushed through cracks in the Earth’s crust, creating volcanic eruptions. Over time, these eruptions built up layers of rock, forming a massive mountain.
At first, Kilimanjaro was just one volcano, but as the eruptions continued, it split into three volcanic cones:
  1. Shira – This was the first volcano to erupt, but it collapsed a long time ago and is now a plateau.
  2. Mawenzi – This is the second oldest cone. It looks jagged and rocky and is very difficult to climb.
  3. Kibo – This is the youngest and tallest of the three cones. It is where Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is located.

Is Kilimanjaro Still Active?

Right now, Kilimanjaro is considered dormant, which means it hasn’t erupted for at least 360,000 years. But scientists say there is still some heat deep inside Kibo, and sometimes fumaroles (steam vents) release gas near the summit. This means there is still some activity underground, but it is not dangerous.

What Makes Kilimanjaro Special?

Climbing Kilimanjaro felt like walking on a piece of Earth’s history. I started in the green rainforest, but as I climbed higher, I saw black volcanic rock and ash-covered slopes. Near the top, the land looked dry and lifeless, reminding me that this was once a powerful volcano. Standing at the summit, I imagined red-hot lava flowing down the mountain millions of years ago—it was incredible to think about!

A Mountain of Fire Turned into a Mountain of Ice

Even though Kilimanjaro started as a fiery volcano, today it is covered with snow and glaciers. The contrast of fire and ice makes it one of the most unique mountains in the world.
