Virgin Australia has begun operating Australia’s first pet-friendly commercial flights, allowing passengers to bring small cats and dogs into the cabin. Pets and their carriers must weigh under 8 kilograms and remain under the seat throughout the flight.

The service is currently limited to select routes between Melbourne and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, with only four designated pet-friendly seats available per flight. Cats are only allowed on flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast.

Pets must be at least eight weeks old, vaccinated, and may need veterinary clearance, especially if they have health issues. Certain breeds banned under state laws are not permitted.

To book, passengers must call Virgin’s Guest Contact Centre at least 72 hours before departure. Pets are required to stay in carriers at all times, and owners are advised to use absorbent mats for potential accidents.

Virgin says allergen risks will be minimal due to cabin ventilation and pet containment rules. The airline’s pet trial has received mixed reactions but marks a first for domestic commercial flights in Australia.
