The Most Dangerous Moments on Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was one of the most exciting adventures of my life, but it wasn’t always easy! There were times when I felt challenged, nervous, and even a little scared. But thanks to my guide, I stayed safe and made it to the top. While Kilimanjaro is not as dangerous as some mountains, there are still moments that can be tough.

1. The Slippery Paths in the Rainforest

At the start of the climb, we hiked through the lush rainforest. It was green, full of birds, and so beautiful! But the trail was also wet and muddy. A few times, I almost slipped on the rocks. My guide reminded me to step carefully and use my trekking poles for balance. If I had been alone, I might have fallen and hurt myself!

2. The Freezing Cold Near the Summit

As we climbed higher, the weather changed. It went from warm to freezing cold. My fingers felt numb, and I could see my breath in the air. If I hadn’t packed enough warm clothes, I could have gotten frostbite! Luckily, my guide checked on me often and made sure I was wearing the right layers to stay warm.

3. The Dizziness from High Altitude

One of the biggest dangers on Kilimanjaro is altitude sickness. As we climbed higher, the air became thinner, which made it harder to breathe. I felt dizzy, and my head started hurting. My guide told me to walk slowly, drink lots of water, and take deep breaths. If I had ignored the signs of altitude sickness, I might have had to turn back.

4. The Rocky and Steep Summit Climb

The hardest part of the climb was Summit Night. We started hiking in the middle of the night, using our headlamps to see in the dark. The trail was steep, rocky, and exhausting. At one point, I felt like I couldn’t take another step! But my guide encouraged me, helped me pace myself, and made sure I didn’t give up.

5. The Tricky Descent

Many people think that getting to the top is the hardest part, but going down can be just as tricky! The ground was loose and slippery, and my legs were so tired. A few times, I almost lost my balance. My guide showed me how to walk carefully and avoid sliding. If I had been alone, I might have fallen and gotten injured.

Why a Guide Makes It Safer

Even though Kilimanjaro has challenges, a good guide makes everything much safer. My guide:

  • Knew the safest paths to take
  • Helped me when I felt dizzy from the altitude
  • Kept me warm by reminding me to layer up
  • Encouraged me when I felt like giving up
  • Made sure I got down safely

Final Thoughts

Yes, there are dangerous moments on Kilimanjaro, but they don’t have to stop you! With good preparation, the right gear, and an experienced guide, the climb is safe and exciting. I’m so glad I had a guide by my side—it made my journey much smoother, and I reached the top feeling proud and happy!

Would I do it again? Absolutely!
