Hi. My 18 year old eldest son Lucas is soon heading off in July on his first solo trip overseas. He is an experienced traveller, couchsurfer and volunteer.

He has only currently booked a one way ticket from Australia to Athens.

He will initially be heading to Greece then overland to the UK. Not planned far beyond that.

I would love to help him have a great trip using your advise.

Love to hear about any European itineraries your teen or you recommend, useful tips for youth, fantastic volunteer organisations to work for, membership schemes to join like National Trust, transport tickets or options or even parent perspectives...

Hello,

It's wonderful that your son Lucas is embarking on his first solo trip overseas! Here are some tips and suggestions to help him have a great and memorable journey:

Flexible Itinerary: Since Lucas has a one-way ticket and is open to exploring, encourage him to keep his itinerary flexible. This allows him to embrace unexpected opportunities and make the most of his travels.

Overland Travel: Overland travel from Greece to the UK offers a unique experience. He can explore diverse cultures and landscapes by taking trains, buses, and ferries. Consider suggesting iconic routes like the Balkans, Central Europe, and the scenic journey through the Swiss Alps.

Safety First: Remind Lucas to prioritize safety. Encourage him to share his travel plans with you and keep in touch regularly. Advise him to stay cautious, especially when meeting new people or using shared accommodations.

Volunteering: Since Lucas has a volunteering background, he might enjoy engaging with local communities during his trip. Research volunteer opportunities in various countries, and ensure he chooses reputable organizations with positive reviews.

Youth Hostels: Suggest staying in youth hostels or budget accommodations to connect with other young travelers. These hostels often organize social events, making it easy to meet people and share experiences.

Travel Memberships: Look into membership schemes like the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) or International Student Identity Card (ISIC). These cards offer discounts on accommodations, transportation, attractions, and more.

Local Experiences: Encourage Lucas to immerse himself in local culture. He can explore street markets, try traditional cuisine, attend local events, and engage with residents to gain a deeper understanding of each destination.

Transport Passes: Research Eurail passes or Interrail passes for train travel across Europe. These passes offer flexibility and unlimited travel within certain regions or countries.

Parent Perspective: As a parent, support Lucas in his journey while letting him take the lead. Offer guidance when needed, but also allow him to make independent decisions and learn from his experiences.

Digital Tools: Recommend using travel apps like Google Maps, language translation apps, and currency converters to navigate new places and communicate effectively.

Documenting Memories: Encourage Lucas to document his journey through photos, videos, or a travel journal. It's a wonderful way to capture memories and share his experiences with you and others.

Embrace Challenges: Remind Lucas that travel might come with challenges, but overcoming them can lead to personal growth and unforgettable stories.

Wishing Lucas an incredible journey filled with enriching experiences, new friendships, and exciting adventures!

Best regards,

Thanks for this sound advice. He is now on day 28 of his trip, he braved the heat waves and wildfires of Greece, hiked a canyon in Albania, caught an overnight ferry to Italy and is now enjoying Rome.

A couple of days ago, he explored Vatican City on his own and was astonished by the Basilica. There have been ups and downs but he is having a fantastic time. He is waking up in a tent this morning in Umbria. Today is Day 31 of his travels 👣🌏

He has travelled all his life with our family so he has far more skills than he realises. He has got this!
